{sunday scoops}

Helping little ones sit through church can be a challenge. Antsy-ness starts to set in, and they often need a little motivation to help them get through the meeting. However, we need help starting the hour before church as well. My husband is gone to meetings before church begins, so I'm on my own getting everyone out the door. The real cooperation starts then--and it's when I need the most of it. So, Sunday Scoops was born.

It's very simple, really. Each child starts with three scoops of ice cream. They will lose a scoop for things like: not listening, squabbling with a sibling, etc. I don't have to give a verbal warning, all I need to do is take away a scoop. If they have lost all their scoops by the end of the meeting, they will have also lost having a Sunday treat. This is a big deal at our house. We have a tradition of making a treat together each Sunday, and it's a much anticipated project. Hopefully this will encourage good behavior, and give them something to look forward to. I'm also okay with them earning scoops back--there is hope!

There are many varying ways you could do this...each family will have something that will work best for them. It doesn't even have to be limited to church--even in the car or at the doctor's office this could come in handy.

ITEMS YOU NEED:
  • file folder
  • stick-on velcro tabs, and strips
  • scrapbook paper
  • contact paper
  • distress ink
  • cardstock
  • ribbon
  • stapler
  • ice cream template (I used THIS one.)
DIRECTIONS:
  • Print out your ice cream template (or draw your own), and cut it out. I used the one above, and reduced it to 65%.
  • Trace the template onto your scrapbook paper of choice--depending on the flavors of ice cream you want! I did 3 scoops per child.
  • Cut out the scoops, then distress all the edges.
  • Cover scoops in contact paper, and then cut out, leaving an edge around the scoop.
  • Decide where you want your scoops inside the file folder. Using the Velcro tabs, apply the scoops to the folder.
  • Apply one long strip of Velcro (just the fuzzy side) to the inside of the folder, next to the scoops. This is a place to put the scoops if they are taken away.
  • Print out names and folder title (Sunday Scoops) on cardstock. Mat with coordinating cardstock, and distress all edges. Mat the title again with scrapbook paper. Apply names and title to folder using double stick tape.
  • Distress edges of folder.
  • Staple ribbon to top of file folder.

Wish me luck! We're trying this out this Sunday!

Thank you Linsey (my very smart friend over at Voila!), for this brilliant idea!

My husband's parents did this exact same thing with him growing up. He said it worked pretty well. But I don't think they had as cute of folders to keep track of it. I love those!!

I love this idea! We call it "Sunday Sundaes"

My kiddo's are a little older so I modified it a little.

My boys get the oppertunity to earn up to two scoops of ice-cream and two toppings.

So, to earn the scoops and toppings they either have to work on cub scouts for 20 minutes, write in their journals, write a (handwritten) letter to a family member that doesn't live with us, or work on their faith in God, for the ones that don't yet get to do faith in God, they have to can read a story to a parent out of the friend.

Thanks for sharing this post I loved the idea!
