{Handmade Cards}

Several years ago, a dear friend invited me over to her house to scrapbook. She was making handmade cards. I made my first card, a birthday card for my soon to be one year old son. I was hooked! Since then, I have made hundreds and hundreds of handmade cards. I love choosing the perfect paper, stamp, or embelishment. I especially love the time I spend making cards with friends. This post is a "how to" guide to starting a card group.

I am involved with two card groups at the moment. The first kind of card group is one where you meet in person and make the cards together. Here is how it works. We have 8 - 10 ladies which is a lot. Six is a bit more manageable, but it is hard to not include everyone in the fun. We set a date and a time to meet - usually after our kids are in bed. Two people in the group are assigned to make the cards. They make an example, and then a kit for each person in the group. Then we spend the night making our cards and visiting. It is so much fun, and you end up with cute cards to take home. In the past when I was part of a smaller group, we each made card kits for everyone. That was fun too. A card kit looks something like this:

The second card group that I am a part of is through the mail. It is a small group of ladies all tied together by knowing the same dear friend mentioned earlier. We are spread out all over the US. We have a theme for the month; something like "thinking about you". Then we also have an optional challenge like, use glitter or ribbon. Each of us makes enough cards for everyone in the group. Then we mail them in and one person mails us each back a set of cards. Getting a package in the mail with BEAUTIFUL cards makes my day. Here is a peek at the cards from this month.

Handmade cards make great gifts. Several years ago, I made a card box (altered photo box) for my mom and mother in law. Each year since then I send them a set of cards to add to their box. They love them, and I always make extras for me to add to my box too. I love having my own set of cards for every occassion that I made. It is also a great way to use up my scraps and extras from scrapbooking. If you have never made a card, give it a try. You might end up as hooked as I am. Here are pictures of my mother's day gifts this year.

I should mention that prior to this, I was not a card person. I would buy cards and never send them - especially Christmas cards. Now I love sending cards. You can too.

I would LOVE to see more of your cards! I would love to make them, but I don't feel my scrapbooking is as creative as yours! I will have to save this idea for my moms birthday (the box of cards for all occasions).
