{a place for everything}

My plan for this series is to have it run on Fridays, and I really wanted to have my first post up yesterday. However...my computer wasn't cooperating with my plan, but better late than never, right?

I debated for awhile about what to post first, but I finally decided to begin with something that you might be thinking about right after the holidays.

I don't know about you, but gift cards are one of my favorite gifts--to give, and to receive. They are also pretty bulky, and may not fit in your wallet. Add to that all the club cards, reward cards, coupons, and receipts you have, and you can have quite a tall pile. My purse is also my home away from home--anything I need, or think I'm going to need while I'm gone is in there. It can also be the dumping ground, for anything and everything.

When you're out shopping, it's really nice to have easy access to all those cards, and any coupons that you've saved. I love coupons, and a good deal, so I have quite a collection--anything from restaurants, car washes, craft stores, diapers, retail, and more. I also have rain checks that I need to keep track of, so that when I'm back at the store, I have it right there ready to go.

Just a few inexpensive items will really make the difference, both for your purse and home, and will keep your shopping organized!

Gift Card & Coupon Organization

I bought a basic accordion-style organizer at Walmart for a little over $1 in their office supply section. It's about 7 inches wide, and 4 inches high, and easily fits into my purse (s) and diaper bag. It came with alphabetical tabs, but I just turned them over and wrote in the categories I needed: grocery, babies & kids, retail, restaurants, car, household, crafts, etc. Of course I added a little vinyl (your Silhouette is perfect for this!), because I can't help myself. :)

I keep my actual grocery coupons separate, since there isn't enough room to hold them in that one space. I do use it for rain checks, and general coupons (our grocery store gives $5 and $10 coupons at checkout on occasion).

As soon as I receive a coupon or gift card, it goes right in to file, and once a month, I go through it and toss out the old and expired coupons. I LOVE it. It's eliminated all those moments at the cash register when you realize you have a coupon or gift card, and don't have it with you. It also means no more searching for coupons you know you had...it's all about having a place for everything. For a few minutes each month, you can potentially save yourself a lot more than that in time and money.

I do one more thing that not only keeps my purse organized, but also makes it really easy to switch from purse to purse, or purse to diaper bag. I bought a clear plastic bag that zips or closes (like a medium-size makeup bag), and in it I keep: OTC medicine and my son's emergency medicine, bandaids, neosporin spray, tissues, lipstick/chapstick, small bottle of lotion, safety pins, and nail clippers. It's perfect for all those little things you want to have on hand, but you won't have to dig around in the bottom of your purse to find it.

.....

Happy organizing!

This is a great suggestion! I was keeping mine organized in a little zipper pouch, but having the tabs and dividers will be even better. Thanks!

Fabulous!!! I'm definitely going to use the accordion for coupons, because I always forget them when I go out and then like you said - I realize at the register when it's too late.

This series is going to be good for me. So good for me. Lol.

I'm horrible at remembering to bring my coupons with me! I think I need to try this and hopefully I won't be stuck at the counter kicking myself for forgetting my Michael's 40% coupon or any other for that matter. Thank you :)

Great idea! I seriously just went into a store yesterday and realized I left my giftcard in my car. I had 3 kids and a cartful of stuff- so, there was no way I could run outside to get it.. I love this idea!

I love the idea of a bag for the little things like chapstick and bandaids! I feel like I spend half of my time in the diaper bag searching for this little tiny object or that little tiny object. Definitely going to have to steal that idea :)

I have the same thing in my pocketbook, but another thing that I have in my pocketbook is a separate ring that I put all my little store cards on because my keyring was getting so many on them and also when you have a teenager driving alot of times that would have my keys with all my store cards on them. I love your web site and enjoy reading it on a regular basis. Thanks for all you do. Jenny P

I LOVE that you're doing this!!! I'm taking the 21 day challenge with a bowl full of lemons but I have a lot of other organization projects I want to tackle this month. (freezer organization, daily schedule, grocery shopping list, the list goes on and on...) It's so great to see everyone else's ideas though!

Great idea Kierste! My goal this year is to be better housewife and be more organized, and I think this will help heaps as I just don't have the room in my wallet to keep all that kind of stuff!

I have already taken out a whole bunch of membership cards and put them in a card case ~ this has been really useful for me.

That's a great idea! I was just noticing this week that my wallet won't close anymore because of all the 'extra' plastic in it. I'm going to give this a try. Thanks!

What a great way to make sure those gift cards don't loose their value before you use them. Thanks for the hint.

Thanks for this tip. I've already decided what I'm going to write on the tabs for mine. I'm going to keep craft store coupons and rainchecks in the same pocket though, that way it's all in one place.

I love this idea! I had bought a few of those $1 binders at Target and have been wondering what to do with all of them. I created one of those coupon books immediately and LOVE it! Thank you! I also have one in my purse to keep receipts organized. My husband and I own a business and so receipts used to be everywhere. Now I have a binder just like this that is labeled: personal, business, cash & checks, stamps, bank deposits. I am super organized now and can find everything, especially my gift cards. Thanks!

Looks like a great thing to do--I'm not that great with coupon. I do have the ones that come in the mail and I need to keep them organiozed. This will work. Also, I do have gift cards that I need to keep organized.

Thanks.
