{buttercream by the pound}

I {adore} frosting. The more the better. (Cake? What cake?) I'm also a homemade frosting girl. It's what my mom did, and what her mom did before that. I can count on three fingers the amount of times I've purchased canned frosting. of my most favorite things is the buttercream frosting on cakes from Sam's Club. (Costco too.) And no offense to those of you who love the whipped topping, but YUCK. :)

Did you know that Sam's Club sells their big buckets of frosting? Yes, it's true. I know, because my friend Erica (also a buttercream lover) and I bought a 28 pound bucket of it a few weeks ago. We did ask at our local Walmart first, but they didn't sell it. Perhaps one of your local grocery stores would be willing to sell it too--it's worth an inquiry!

It's also a bargain! It ended up being only $1 a pound, which is generally cheaper than buying canned frosting at the grocery store. Erica put it all in gallon freezer bags (about 2 pounds per bag), which works perfectly, because they stack and lay flat in the freezer.

When you're ready to use it, just take a bag out of the freezer, and let it thaw for an hour or so. The consistency of the frosting is just right for piping, and I like just snipping a corner of the bag that it was frozen in. You can also remove the frosting from the bag, place it in a bowl, and add any color you like.

I still use homemade frosting most of the time, but when I need to quickly frost a batch of cupcakes, I head straight to the freezer.

Did you know that most supermarkets with an in-house bakery, will sell you a tub or a bucket of frosting, too? I find that very practical.

Wow! I had no idea!! Thanks so much! I love frosting too! I always get so sad when someone buys a cake and gets it with the (lame!) whipped topping.

As much as I love frosting, I suck at making it so I always get stuck buyinf the canned versions.

My local Kroger will put it in a piping bag for you and sell it by the pound. My friend found this out by accident one day and it is our best kept 'secret'!!

I think the Sam's deal is more cost effective if you have the storage room in the freezer. Thanks!!

Kierste I'm a whippped topping hater as well. Too much fluff and no substance. Thank you for that Costco tip, you know I'm going to buy it and pass it off as my own! Nothing beats buttercream, nothing.

I read the title and started to drool. I may have to use this idea. I love making frosting, but sometimes I just don't have time to make it.

Frosting in my freezer...not a good idea. I would go there one day to finally frost some cupcakes and find there were no bags of frozen frosting. BAD IDEA I tell ya!
Wish I knew that Costco cold their frosting, my friend is buying some from the local grocery store to frost cupcakes for a wedding but we had NO IDEA she could have gotten it at Costco.
Always next time...

I thought I was the only person in the world that loved frosting! Most people seem to scrap it to the edge of the plate when they get the corner piece of cake (that I'm always jealously eyeing wondering why they picked that one if they didn't want all that deliciousness!) I'm going to the store to find out about the bucket of frosting...
