{a place for everything...with Under the Table and Dreaming}

Welcome Stephanie Lynn, from Under the Table and Dreaming!

.....

I have two drawers in my kitchen that drive me crazy; the two that hold all the larger utensils and cooking gadgets. I have yet to find an organizer large enough to keep spatulas, spoons, and can openers in line. A trip to the hardware store, a couple pieces of wood and some amazing glue... and you can say hello to organized bliss.

Each divider was made with 1/4 inch {thick} Poplar Boards. Poplar is a versatile wood that is easy to work with and glue plus its ideal for cabinetry and furniture. I used 3 inch {width} boards as they were the perfect size when turned vertical to fit inside the drawers. Poplar boards can be found at your local hardware store and run approximately $1.50 for a 1/4 X 3 X 2.

--

Measure the width of the inside of the drawer and cut your board accordingly. I used a chop saw however these can easily be cut with a hand saw as well.

Sand the cut edges for a smooth finish. The palm-sized rubber grip on the Norton Sanding Bug by Rockler makes hand sanding a breeze.

Insert the board into the drawer and align so that it is straight.

Run a bead of Gorilla Wood Glue along the front and back of each seam. Gently run your fingertip over the glue, removing any excess, and filling in any gaps. The glue dries a natural color so you will not even be able to see the glue line when dry.

Let sit to dry for 24 hours. Everything is held into place simply with the Gorilla Wood Glue, that's it ~ nothing else. The bond of this glue is simply incredible and unmatched in my opinion. {My organizers have been in for about a month now and not one board even has a slight wiggle}

The first drawer has three large horizontal compartments...

and the second drawer has one large vertical {for my rolling pins} and three horizontal compartments.

This same application can be used in pretty much any drawer bringing you endless organized happiness. {love} I definitely will be doing more of these in my kitchen...I thinking even in the bath vanity too!

.....

I've never heard of the Poplar boards--wow, being able to do that in some of my drawers would be WONDERFUL. And I love the little Norton sanding bug--will have to look for one of those online.

Thanks.

Great idea! We have a large, DEEP kitchen drawer where I just throw all of our spatulas, large spoons, can openers, measuring cups, etc. It drives me crazy but I couldn't find drawer dividers that were "deep" enough. My husband suggested making our own, but we never got around to it. Thanks for the inspiration!

Love it, what a simple fix to make your kitchen so much more organized! Great way to have a do it yourself project that doesn't require a bunch of tools and- if you know the widths you need, the hardware stores can cut them for you I'm sure..

I needed this post like last week! Spent a whole day between IKEA and the Container store getting organizers that would fit my super long and super narrow drawer and spent a small fortune. Your 'fix' looks so much better too. Do you think its too late to take them back?
