{makeover time! looking for ideas...}

We moved into our home three years ago when it was brand new, and it's remained basically the same since then.  Well, I'm ready for a change.  Not a huge one, but there is one room in particular that needs a little bit of a makeover.

The music room is a beautiful red color, and I love it.  I have loved red for years--far before it was trendy--and I will love it long after it's not.  I will probably always decorate with red in some way--it's my color. However, it's feeling a little dark in there, and it's spilling over into the kitchen, dining area, and even into the family room.'s time for a makeover!

I know I want to do faux wainscotting, as wonderfully demonstrated by Amy over at The Idea Room:

I plan to take the wainscotting up higher on the wall, probably only leaving 3 feet or so at the top.
Here is my music room when we first moved in:

So the question is...what color should I paint the top part of the wall?  I really would love to hear  your suggestions!  Some of my thoughts include a light cream, and making the room totally neutral, with spots of color.  I also thought about a really good blue--like a slate, with hints of gray.  There's also a piano on the other wall that you can't see (which is a whole other problem in and of itself--I'm trying to get brave enough to paint it).

I'm planning to start this project in a couple of weeks, when we get back from our big camping trip, and I need to decide on a color and get all the supplies ready soon. I would LOVE to hear your ideas, and any fabulous paint colors you have to share!

I have a piano that I am trying to get brave enough to paint as well! Though part of my problem is deciding what color.

For your room.. what about going neutral on the walls, and then paint your piano red!

I love the red with the white trim. If you do the wainscoting...why not leave the red up at the top. All that white will brighten it up. Of course the slate would look wonderful too.

Well considering that red is my most favorite color of all I say just leave it. I think that once the wainscoting is up it will help break things up. I think the red adds elegance to a room myself. Be bold...stay red.

You could keep the red and put and stencil over it. That might look funny,I don't know. I do like blue gray too.

I love the idea of painting the piano red! You love red, it's a great statement piece and red piano seems so rockstar! Everything goes with red!

I do like your red color that you have, but if you are going to do the neutral thing, we had TONS of people ask what our wall color was when we were selling our house...and it was a tan neutral. Not sure if you have Colombia paints near you but it was called October Harvest. But I do like the blue-grey/slate colors too. I can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Personally, I would keep the piano natural. I would find it hard to paint an instrument. Maybe it would look better set against the wainscotting -- and you could put some accent pieces on top to tie it into the decorating scheme, and perhaps a coordinating cushion on the bench as well. I like your idea of slate blue for the upper part of the wall.

I like the idea of having a cream or neutral on the walls and pops of color here and there in the room. I think it would be really fun. Good luck. I have a hard enough time selecting nail polish when I get a pedicure, let alone selecting paint for my walls! :) Can't wait to see what you decide.

I love the color it is now! With the addition of the white faux wainscot at the bottom the room should brighten right up. Then add a white wreath.. and other red and white quilt decor on the wall to make the maroon/red less prominent, but just as beautiful as it already is.. I love that color!

I'm also trying to get up the guts to paint my piano...we got it for basically free (traded some sewing to my sil) and its finish is badly sun-damaged...figured a good sanding and some paint would add some personality to an otherwise dull design. BUT

LOVE the wainscoating 2/3 up, love the blue/slate OR red...I'm a 'red' person, myself. :) Good luck! I'll be watching this!!!

Hi Kierste! I love your blog! I love it so much that you (among other very talented ladies) have inspired me to start my own blog. Anyway, since I added BPP as a blog I follow I just saw this post & have a great color that I just used & LOVE! It's a gray - don't be afraid, it's very warm. It is called "Olivewood" by Glidden. I got my paint chip from Walmart. It looks gray but has green in it... looks like a light olive green in a way. SO neutral. I never thought I would love it so much but wanted a change from the usual khaki. BTW, cream, black & burlap are my colors in there... kinda like a sheet of music! I have pictures of my bedroom if you'd like to see them! Good luck!

you love red, so leave it red! doing the faux wainscotting will be enough of a break in such a strong color. only if/when you sell your home you ought to paint it a neutral color. enjoy what you love!!

I love green and it's such a calming color but you need to go with what you love. Do you want a cool color (blue/green) or keep it warm like the red (yellow/brown)

I love the red! I think the wainscotting will look fabulous in that room. P.S. The view out that window is incredible.

You guys are awesome! Thank you for all the great input--now just time for a decision, lol. My husband said the SAME thing about keeping it red--I don't know why I hadn't thought of it. I think I might...

I would paint the piano if it was me, I would have a soft green or some other earth tones. I adore all your decorating ideas! You think outside the box and use what you have. I was a single mom too and I had to " do with what I had"!

Do you have to paint the Piano, or is it in good shape the way it is? I like the red, but do think it is a lot. I think it will be great with the wainscoting and maybe some light-colored art pieces hung to soften the boldness of the Red. Enjoy making the changes;)

Love love LOVE the red! I would leave the red, and do your wainscoating still. I saw a kitchen done that way, and it was absoulutely beautiful..besides..w/ the style of the french doors and window frames...the wainscoating and the red would look very New England-ish...which I think is so cute!

I love red, too. I love wainscoting. I stink at decorating and can't wait to see what you do.

Music rooms are just calling for wainscoting! I almost went for it when we first moved in but just did crown molding for now. We'll get to it sometime. I'm excited for you! I love red too. But the grey we ended up with is fun because it "goes" with anything and changes with the sun to be different hues-which I love too! So if you go with a grey/gray be sure you know what they are coloring it with (blue, purple, green, etc.) because it will change with the sunshine during the day!
