{technology punch cards}

We certainly love technology at our house, but sometimes it's easy to let the amount of time my kids are using it add up too fast--especially in the wintertime.  Now that spring is coming, and summer isn't too far behind, I wanted to come up with a fun way to keep those technology minutes in check, and encourage more time outside or with other fun activities.

Enter in...technology punch cards! What I love about these cards is that they are just so easy and convenient to use, and they don't take up a lot of space or have a lot of parts.  Each child has their own card, and they get a punch for every 30 technology minutes.  Our kids get a card per week, but you could make that work for any time structure you wanted to.

Since I ♥ you all so much, I've included the pdf files for download.

I've got more punch cards coming, stay tuned!

I really like this idea. Do they get the punch before or after use & do you have any tips on timing the tech time? We are definitely a family that needs some tech limits (myself included) :)

Therese--

These are great questions! We give the punch after the time is used up, and a kitchen egg timer is perfect for keeping the time. They come and let me know they want to use a punch, I set up the timer, and make a mark on the punch card (so I know it's currently in use). Then after the timer goes off, I punch the card.

Good luck!

My son is in kindergarten and only allowed video games and cartoons on weekends and even then he has to have had good behavior at school each day of the week prior; I think that I will implement these punch cards, to limit his endless hours sitting inside on the weekends!

I don't have kids, but I think this is a great idea! I am always thinking about how I will address technology in the future when we do have kids, and I think this is a great way to encourage a variety of activities.

How do you use this card? Just for the computer, or do you you like to keep track of video games and TV as well?
